Is it true that…

With the F-Gas Regulation coming into force, will refrigerant and spare parts for repairing products with a GWP higher than the permitted threshold, which were previously placed on the market, be prohibited?

False

But with limits on the origin of the refrigerant.

The new F-Gas Regulation (EU 2024/573) clearly states that the placing on the market of parts for products and equipment necessary for the repair and maintenance of existing equipment is permitted provided that:

  •  The plant's capacity has not increased;
  •  The amount of refrigerant has not increased;
  •  The refrigerant must not be replaced with one with a higher GWP.

The Regulation also specifies that from 1 January 2032, the use of fluorinated gases with a GWP of 750 or higher and up to 2500 for the maintenance of chillers is permitted. For other equipment, use is only permitted for non-virgin gases, which are:

Recycled, meaning recovered from the same equipment undergoing maintenance and reused by the company performing it.

Regenerated, which are found in specially marked containers

In conclusion

The new Regulation sets important limits, but does not prevent the maintenance of existing equipment. The objective is to reduce the environmental impact, without leaving operators in the sector unprepared.
