Railway – Case History

The high-speed ‘Direttissima’ Rome-Florence railway line, connecting two of the most important cities in central Italy over a total length of 254 km. The project is part of the necessary works for the implementation of electrical systems to power the base radio stations designed to integrate and upgrade the GSM-R network..
The equipment inside the shelter needed to be maintained at an appropriate temperature, avoiding both high and low temperatures. Therefore, both cooling and heating functions were required.

Essential needs of the application:

• Efficiency to ensure the proper transit of trains
• Reliability to ensure 24/7 operation
• Separate ventilation to ensure the internal air exchange/circulation,
  which is necessary even when free cooling is disabled.

cosmotec provided the customer with two air conditioners from the Predator series and Kryos GS filter fans.
The solution accurately met the customer’s requirements. The 2000W Predator air conditioner, used to dissipate heat inside the shelter, was also equipped with a heating element.
To significantly reduce operating costs, it featured a free-cooling system.
To ensure high system reliability, the units were remotely connected via the Modbus RTU protocol for monitoring and redundancy functions, and had 48Vdc emergency power supply to ensure high reliability of the entire system. Finally, the GS filter fans allowed for separate ventilation.

Main features of Predator air conditioners

• Free Cooling System ensures significant energy savings. Whenever the external temperature
  is lower than the internal temperature (ΔT° 0-10°C), the shelter is cooled without costs,
  as the compressor and condenser fan are off.
• High EER Values: At nominal conditions, and increases with the use of free cooling.
  Condition L35L35 EER ~ 2, condition L15L35 EER ~ 10.
• Emergency Power Supply: Part of the unit (free cooling damper motor, evaporator fan,
  control components) operates powered by a direct current emergency source.
  This ensures continuous internal air circulation, even in the absence of the main power supply.
• Modbus RTU Protocol: Allows monitoring of the air conditioner’s proper operation,
  displaying the main parameters and any alarms. It also enables the modification of some parameters..

Main features of Kryos³ filter fans

• protection against dust and water splashes, with an IP54 protection rating.
• Kryos³ are made of ABS Blend and treated with substances that provide UV resistance,
  thereby extending the product’s lifespan

The customer has installed approximately 60 shelters along the entire Florence railway line,
providing for each:
