Designed for America: Inside Cosmotec's UL testing lab

Testing, UL Certification and Reliability: Why an In-House Laboratory Makes the Difference

When it comes to cooling solutions for electrical enclosures, performance data alone is not enough. Reliability, safety, and operational continuity are equally critical and must be verified through rigorous testing procedures. Before being released to the market, every solution must undergo extensive validation to ensure that it performs as expected under all operating conditions, including the most demanding ones.

To support this process, cosmotec has made significant investments in recent years to enhance its testing infrastructure, creating a dedicated facility for verifying the performance and safety of its industrial cooling systems.

Real-world operating conditions simulation

Inside the cosmotec Greenovation Hub, two climatic chambers are dedicated exclusively to testing industrial air conditioners. These facilities are designed to evaluate unit performance under all operating conditions specified by product requirements.

The laboratory is capable of testing cooling units with capacities of up to 9 kW, reproducing in a controlled environment the conditions that products may encounter throughout their entire service life.

Inside the test chambers, parameters such as cooling capacity, energy efficiency, operating limits, sound emission levels, and IP protection ratings are measured and validated with precision. At the same time, engineering decisions such as sensor placement and control software configuration are analyzed and optimized to ensure ideal performance under any operating condition.

A Strategic Resource for the UL Certification Process

The laboratory also verifies electrical and mechanical compliance according to European and North American standards and is UL-certified for product marking activities. Testing is carried out by qualified personnel in full compliance with the applicable regulations, including IEC UL 60335-1 and UL 60335-2-40, which define the safety requirements for electrical equipment and HVAC systems.

At the end of the testing process, detailed technical documentation is prepared and then submitted to UL as part of the evaluation and approval process required to obtain certification.

Having in-house expertise and infrastructure enables Cosmotec to reduce validation times, continuously monitor product quality, and accelerate the introduction of new solutions to the market.

Verified Quality and Controlled Processes

In the world of certifications, the value of a test depends on the reliability of the process used to perform it. For this reason, the laboratory undergoes regular audits to verify compliance with the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025, the international standard that defines competence requirements for testing and calibration laboratories.

These audits ensure that all testing procedures are carried out using rigorous, repeatable, and internationally recognized methods, fully aligned with the high standards required by UL certification programs.

Added Value for Electrical Enclosure Manufacturers

For companies designing and manufacturing electrical enclosures for the North American market, using components that have already been tested and certified according to UL requirements represents a significant advantage.

The availability of test data, compliance with applicable standards, and the assurance that products have successfully passed extensive verification procedures help simplify the design phase, reduce risks related to regulatory compliance, and accelerate approval processes.

Cosmotec’s investment in testing and certification activities is driven by this vision: to provide customers not only with reliable cooling solutions for electrical enclosures, but also with practical tools to improve project reliability and successfully meet the challenges of the global market.
