Case History
The Customer
The company is a world-leading manufacturer of wood-based panels, such as particleboard (PB), medium-density fibreboard (MDF), high-density fibreboard (HDF), oriented strand board (OSB), and laminate flooring. With a history spanning more than a century, the company has been committed from the outset to developing innovative, sustainable products that are tailored to customer needs.

In a production line for recycled wood panels, the glue mixer needs to be kept at a controlled temperature. Temperature control ensures higher product quality; in fact, cooling the glue mixer helps maintain a low temperature for the materials, allowing the glue to polymerise at the correct rate. Furthermore, the correct working temperature prevents material build-up on the surfaces involved in the process, thereby increasing line productivity. The client's request led us to carry out two installations at different production sites, where the respective climatic conditions allowed us to propose different solutions.
The client's need was to find a partner who could develop an integrated system with particular attention to:
- Efficiency: OPEX Reduction
- Reliability: The production facility is sized to operate 24/7
- Connectivity: to enable the integration of the cooling system with the production plant’s supervision system
The proposed solution involved the design and construction of a system made up of several components, allowing the integration of different solutions such as water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers, in order to make the production of chilled water highly efficient.
The following machines were installed on the first system:
- 1xWSW281 825 kW Water-cooled screw chiller
- 2x DRY COOLER with electronically commutated fans
- 1x HYDRONIC MODULE with pumps and three-way valves for the condensation circuit
- 2xWSA362 836 kW Air-cooled screw chiller
- 1×4. PLANT Plant Management, Optimisation and Supervision System
The system consists of two chilled water production lines feeding into a cold storage tank. The first utilises two air-cooled condenser units, installed directly on the roof of the warehouse. The second is characterised by a water-cooled chiller, which includes a complete dry cooler solution, installed on the roof, and a hydronic unit for managing the condensation circuit, installed in an indoor technical room. The two chilled water production lines are integrated into an operational logic dictated by a suitably designed and realised supervisory system utilising the 4.PLANT platform.
4.PLANT is a management, optimisation and supervision system that features integration logic for plant resources with the aim of maximising their yield as environmental conditions change. In addition to efficiency, this system guarantees correct productivity by managing operating logic specifically designed with the customer. Reliability is also ensured by the type of chillers proposed, which feature complete redundancy of components in the refrigeration and hydraulic circuits. 4.PLANT also allows for the optimisation of the connection between the cooling system and the management system of the entire production plant, using various BUS communication protocols.
The second plant, located on an installation site with temperatures ranging from -40°C to 45°C, required specially designed equipment to operate in such a wide temperature range. This condition allowed us to take advantage of the low ambient temperatures to produce chilled water without using compressors.
The following machines have been installed on the second plant:
- 1xWSW281 825 kW Water-cooled screw chiller
- 2x DRY COOLER with electronically commutated fans
- 1x Good Value for Money Hydronic module with pumps and three-way valves and heat exchanger for mixed mode and free cooling
Free Cooling: the use of free cooling makes the system particularly efficient. In fact, at ambient temperatures below -5°C, the entire cooling capacity required can be generated without the use of the compressor, while between -4°C and 10°C the system operates in mixed mode, meaning that free cooling generates part of the required cooling capacity, leaving the remainder to the compressor.
